| August 29 2005
With hurricane Katrina blasting New Orleans, Mississippi, and other regions on the gulf coast; one realizes that not only will the city, but the US will never be the same again. Devastation, chaos, grief... Words that describe some of the emotions of some residents who have lost everything but the shirt on their back. Others have been more fortunate. A whole city; to be evacuated, empty for months. How will life be in New Orleans after this, after the city is rebuilt. What will this do to the economy? Gas prices have hit 3.25 in some places in the US; in other places prices have hit 5$ a gallon due to unscrupulous gougers. Many foreign nations have already pledged help. But will it be enough? It is said that katrina will scar the nation forever. How will people handle the emotional tragedies? These and many other questions are out there, some answered, others unanswered. What will the future hold? Who knows; only time will tell. |
| I live in a Hurricane prone area.I feel when a evacuation order is issued that those left to there own devices because they can not afford to leave;should have in advance (Hurricane Season Only) a voucher from there city's welfare department to get them out of town.
By bus, plane or whatever means it takes. This would have eliminated much of the suffering and related deaths that is going on now in NO. Oh,actually I have two things...Do you really have to question why Bush does not step foot in NO? Answer...he doesn't want to get his feet stomped on. This is just the beginning of Life as we know it. The check is in the mail scenario. |

| Mayfield said the Keys could be hit by storm surge up to 25 feet and battering waves even higher than that.
"I just don't see how the Florida Keys will get out of this without having a major impact," he said. "Running visitors off this weekend, which is [usually] an excellent weekend, has a devastating economic impact to the Keys, especially Key West," Wheeler said. He said many people come down for the entire 10 days of Fantasy Fest, which culminates in the final weekend before Halloween. An evacuation and even a brush by a powerful storm results in business and tourism losses for a few days, but the nightmare scenario is a direct hit, said one hotelier. "That would be absolutely terrible," said Steve Robbins, general manager of the Doubletree Grand Key Resort. "I've already lost the business for this week, but it would be quite a financial hit if we lost next week." Robbins said the Doubletree went from having all its 216 rooms being sold out this Thursday night to less than 98 still booked as of 4 p.m. Wednesday. "But as far as next week, I'm still sitting pretty much the same," he said. The resort only took prepayments for the Wednesday through Saturday of next week, Robbins said, so no refunds are due — yet. Wheeler said Hurricane Wilma lends an ominous tone for the first part of the Keys' tourist season, which peaks in March. "August, September, October are the slowest months, including Fantasy Fest, and we depend on weekend business," Wheeler said. "We depend on the third and fourth weekend [of October] to make it a good month. "To lose revenue the first month of the fiscal year has a negative impact," he said. |

| Hurricanes kill people and cause billions of dollars of damage. Forecasters attempt to predict their intensity and paths but are often off base, leading to people not seeking shelter early enough or the opposite -- an unnecessary evacuation and loss of tourism dollars. |
